Complete survey required for insurance (and my own piece of mind!)

Cant say for your area.

But our survey cost £300 plus lifting the boat which was another £100 (all inc. VAT). That was for a 25ft boat. It varies greatly from surveyor to surveyor and also lifting costs vary a lot.

That doesnt sound too bad I suppose - if only for your own piece of mind! Are they a pretty cheerful lot generally or is it luck of the draw and could have a really unfriendly one who won't advise things to assist?

He will definately find osmosis and steer you towards a cure. Ignore it. How they can use a damp meter on a wet boat amazes me!!

Then it might be an idea to have it done before it goes back into the water me thinks! I don't mind sensible suggestions - 'an extra XX here', or 'something there might be handy' but when you expect cobblers before you start you begin to wonder!

Well worth getting several quotes (bear in mind potential travel costs) and asking if they mind you being there asking occasional questions or peering over a shoulder. You may find yourself drafted as a torch carrier/clipboard holder etc but you will learn more than you might from just reading a report.

Hearing "F@@k me ragged, that's a mess" means a lot more than reading "on lifting the access panel the bilge area was seen to be untidy with evidence of standing water" or, for the optimist "You could eat you dinner off that" as opposed to "the engine bay appeared clean and tidy with no evidence of oil leaks or water ingress".

Suprisingly ours didnt, but then again he got very low readings (5 to 10, from a scale of 100, 60 being acceptable on older boats) from the boat when it had just been slipped!!!
