If you finish up using epoxy beware of the potential health risks associated with its use.

Be especially careful of dry sanding it. Some people develop a really nasty respiratory condition through an allergic reaction and become sensitised to even tiny amounts of epoxy dust. A 50p dust mask is not good enough. Ask me how I know this!
