having read a post the other day on purchasing new wet weather gear. some one suggested the compass set Professional Offshore 5000. there was one report that said there were not the best quality.

has any one else bought any and how have they performed? will they keep me dry doing mainly coastal sailing with the odd trip across the north sea.

they seem too cheap to be any good or will i be waisting my money if i buy Gill Musto etc at the boat show???

cheers

alex

i bought the Gill key west suit from southampton boat show. i think i got about £100 of the ticket price so paid about £230 for it and would say it is great. the best purchase i have made, you may like to step up but these have been used in all weather and kept me nice and warm and dry

Perfectly OK gear...

We had a set on board... yep they didn't last as long as a Musto offshore set would.... but then you'd could buy 3 sets for the same price... and they certainly lasted better than a third of the time of a Musto set, more like 75% of the time...

They were warm and waterproof.... good enough for us.

I think from memory we binned them after 3 full seasons of use (circa 4,000nm) by SWMBO

SWMBO has a set of compass (forget exact model) trousers and coat. The zip on the coat kept sticking and they were very relcutant to do anything about it, after a lot of 'discussion' they eventually took it back and swapped it. Since then we did a 3000 mile cruise around the med (so not used everyday but given some abuse!), but its lasted well, the only thing we noticed is that its alot heavier and bulkier than my Henry Lloyd set, for a similar amount of protection.

Personally I would go to boatshow and see if u can and negotiate a bargainon Henry Llyd or Musto etc, although I find Southampton boat show much better for negotiating on price of clothes etc.

Fine. Both I & SWMBO have a set. Not heavily used but absolutely fine. As said, they certainly last longer than 1/3rd a Musto set.

Only one problem though. Someone nicked ny jacket.

I had a set and they were fine for close to 5 years of regular use. A bit heavy, but good value IMHO.

SwMBO informed that I wasn't going sailing with other people in such a scruffy jacket last year (the fact that they were blind seemed to irrelevant), so I went to see what was about and made the mistake of trying on a Gill Atlantic jacket. Half the weight & sooo comfortable, but I still get the shakes when I think of the price /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif It's the most expensive bit of clothing I've ever owned!

They also have a zipped in removable fleece bodywarmer, had mine a year, been dry warm and no problems. Would like Henry LLoyd or Musto as they seem less bulky.

But for the price with fleece bodywarmer included, value and can't fault.

I purchased a Compass Pro Offshore 3000 set in 2003 ( quite similar but without fleece bodywarmer). I chose it at the time because it was made of breathable fabric and sold for less than some of the brands wanted for a non-breathable set. It has provided 6 seasons good use so far, although perhaps no longer 100% waterproof in prolonged rain anymore. Hopefully it will keep going for a couple more years. Overall, good value for money.
