I'd really like a Musto set but they are so expensive. The Compass Offshore 5000 ones are half the price but are they half the quality? they seem to have all the features. Are other breathable fabrics so much inferior to GorTex? Anyone got a pair and willing to comment?

many thanks

Colin

i've used the compass offshore ones and they seem ok to me,never used musto tho so i'm not sure of the difference,
the compass ones have neoprene on the wrists reinforced patchs in the right places, removable inner fleece, etc, the only thing i found at night in biscay was on one boat we were exposed to the wind all the time and a scarf round the neck was a welcome addition, this may apply to other oilies as well

I have them. and have found them excellent, good value for money. Musto is good kit, but way over priced in my opinion.

As with any clothing, you can't assume that the price you are paying for the more expensive ones is buying you better material or workmanship.

A few years ago I tried on some Levi 501s. Nicely made, nice fit, but pricey. I found another brand at about a third the price that fitted just as nicely and appeared to be just as well made. I asked the shopkeeper what I would be getting for £42 that I wouldn't get for £15.

"A very expensive advertising campaign," he replied.

In over 50 years I have never sailed a yacht which didn't have waterproofed steering and hand bearing compasses. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a set of Compas olies. They were OK when new, but after a few seasons use, they started to leak. And I mean leak BIG TIME. I was soaked to the skin.

Chucked them into the skip and bought a set of JAG olies. I've had them a couple of seasons, and so far so good. I like them, and half the price of Musto.

I don't believe that Musto's woudl last twice as long !

[/ QUOTE ]12 years ago a bunch of us started sailing a wet boat offshore and decided to go and buy some decent kit in preparation! All but me bought the latest Musto HPX Ocean gear. All the guys are still wearing them and they're still going strong. My Henri Lloyds had to go back to HL for repairs after a couple of years but are also still working fine despite very heavy use. I'm sure the Compass stuff is good, but Musto will last forever in my experience!

You do generally pay for what you get, I had a set of XM's that lasted a few miserable years before I relegated them.
Had a set of Musto for coming on 7 years, sure they look tatty now but still good and dry. The smaller the boat, the better the oillies you'll be needing!
Goretex is undoubtably more expensive but better in the wet and doesn't have the flappability of a carrier bag and keeps you warmer as it doesn't puff out the warmed up air.
My wife bought a Must jacket last year as she looked like a drowned rat in her cheapie, now she looks happy like a cat in front of the fire even when its orrible out.
