Lots of options (first off the top of my head):
1) Use luminous / phosphorescent/ fluorescence paint either on top of compass or paint around 'equator' and see if it provides enough light. Sun energizes it during day - free light at night. Not tried it.
2) a 3V coin cell with a 7 pence red LED stuck on - watch out for magnetism and aesthetics 0 could move coin cell a distance away and use very very thin enameled wire.
3) wire in to boats 12V system a red LED - fair bit or work
4) buy a military grade luminescent torch https://www.inovatech.co.uk/shop/Tritium-Military-Torch.html but expensive.
Some places sell similar 2 cm long sticks in different colours that do sames thing for a lot less - £9 from Amazon, bottom link I think.

(add a decent reflector to the tritium key ring thing) and you may have a good solution.
5) use a cheap torch with red filter and just shine it on compass when needed
