Most of we 'infidels' - or 'kafiri' in impolite company - tend to install North-seeking compasses in our boats. I've been wondering why.
There are alternatives, such as the Mecca Qibla Compass, which have been in use for considerably longer than our dull, old North-seeking jobs bequeathed to us by Viking rapist-pillagers on their summer hols. Further, there are a darned sight more folk resident in these Sceptered Isles who fly off Mecca than head for the delights of the Very High Arctic each year.
Then, of course, there is all the PC and non-discriminatory law....... Surely all our sea schools should also fit a Qibla Compass to their boats, for the benefit of their devout clients 5 times a day, every day. There's even a Mecca chart projection to go with it, as Arabs were navigating the oceans for trade while we were still pissing about with full-face woad. So, howzaboutit, MCA and RYA?
