Does anyone have any advice about the difference between a Silva bulkhead compass and a Plastimo Contest bulkhead compass? Which is the better one?

Well I've just bought and installed a new Plastimo Contest to replace same with very worn glass and big air bubble. Must say it all feels a bit cheapy plasticky, but I'm sure fine for the job. Bought ebay £89 freepost, local chandlers were £130 something...

If your are using it as a racing compass to pick up wind shifts and the correct tack I think you will find it a no-Contest....the Silva 103R is the classic...never-yet-beaten and used on the last 8 or 9 racing dinghies/yachts I have owned. I have used the Contest and the Silva with the PE card but did not like them.... not saying they were bad or faulty just that with age I know what I like and like what I know.

My motor boat came factory fitted with a Plastimo....nothing wrong with it...I just like Silva compasses better.

Thanks folks.
I too, have heard from someone who services compasses that the Plastimo is the better compass. Another retailer told me that they don't come back for servicing. And then, they're generally cheaper.
So, it looks like a Plastimo then.
Ta for your help with this.

'They don't come back for servicing', maybe because they're not made to allow any servicing !

I have a Contest and am perfectly happy with it, it replaced a 1978 model a couple of years ago.

One thing to watch, my old model developed an air bubble, which I foolishly ignored as it stayed the same for months; then I went aboard one weekend and the card was at a jaunty angle, completely dry. I suppose it should go without saying that there was thick fog that weekend...
