I used a half full tin of navy blue Compass antifouling left over from last year, which was nearly enough to finish my hull. When I opened a new tin to finish the job, I found it was a completely different colour (more of a mid/royal blue).

Fortunately, by scraping the bottom of the tin, lid, spreading thin etc etc I just about managed to complete with the old tin.

I contacted Compass about this and (eventually) they have told me that the formulation has changed for this year, and that the colour is indeed different.

So, to anyone in a similar position, don't start with the old tin unless you are sure you have enough to finish the job!!

Sparkie,
I was in the same boat(sorry!) as you, but I noticed that this year they are saying that their Cruising Selfpolishing is only suitable for inland, north sea and baltic waters.
After 6 months last year, I found quite a growth on my hull (North Irish Sea).
Cheers, Dave.

I used high performance navy blue for "hotter waters" and found growth on there very quickly.
e-mailed compass and really did not get a very satisfactory answer. Just the usual " oh we have not had any other complaints"

Hi Dave.

I'm Cardigan Bay based. I've found one good coat just about lasts the season, weed growth is on a par with other cheaper products I have used, I do mine every year anyway and she's on a drying mooring on sand so it doesn't have a great deal to do.

May be different this year though if they have changed the recipe.

Don't know if the basic formula has altered, would guess just the colour from Compass's reply. Won't know about performance until Autumn 2006, as won't be using "new" shade until next spring now. Talk about forward planning!

As the boss of Compass Watersports Ltd / Compass24 I always like to keep abreast of what everyone out there thinks of various things and you've obviously noticed that we modified the colour of the blue antifouling this year (we made the red a bit lighter as well). We did this so it matched more of other people's product. We got stick last year because ours didn't match anyone elses'! We haven't modified the formula though - it's still, or should be exactly the same. The reason that the description of where to use it has changed is that I translated it all from the German (where our catalogues/internet are put together) and forgot to modify it to our local area when proof reading it (during the London Boat Show with everything else going on). Generally it works really well in any low or medium fouling area, but like all soluble matrix a/f, you need to get enough on! If the boat stays afloat we recommend 2 good coats after cleaning the hull and washing off with fresh water. If you're on a drying mooring, 1 coat will probably do except where it bottoms.

Interestingly, the manufacturers of our HP antifouling tested it in the Med as it has been formulated for higher fouling and for all those Germans and Swiss who keep their boats in Croatia, Greece and Mallorca! With it's manufacturer's own brand label on it, it sells for more money and get's great reviews!

Hope that helps - sorry about the colour change. We don't have any plans to do that again!

I used your HP and at the moment seem to have a lot of "gunge" on both hulls. Probably is only harbour c**p from the winter but will get back to you mid year when she comes out to have her bums titivated - good or bad will let you know.

That would be good. Manufacturers claim all sorts of wonders but it's only customers that really give you the proper answer. There's nothing like having spent your hard won taxed income to sharpen your resonses! By the way, where do you keep your boat?
