Just in case I have some free time on board, I have been thinking how to improve/alter/replace the companionway from cockpit to saloon for a more user friendly design. The problems with the existing are: angle of descent is very steep with insufficient steps (4) - 5 would be much better. Its also very heavy - made from solid hardwood. The steps need to be removed to access the front of the engine for servicing etc. I am wondering if anyone has done this on their boat and would be interested in the design and materials used. I like the idea of hollow metal sections - Moody's and others used tubular stainless with plywood treads. I am thinking about aluminium for lightness. There is plenty of space forward to accommodate a longer companionway on a less acute angle

I think most boats suffer from that 'angle of descent' aspect - basically to get as much cabin space as possible without losing to steps.

My 25ftr has a large engine and the box forces you to enter arse first ... its huge ! But nothing I can do about it.

My 38ftr has a smaller engine that the box provides a halfway level. The steps slot on top locking in place. Then from box down is a step fixed to box front. It makes the assembly a lot less than a continuous stepway down. But still steep ...
