Is it normal for a broker to charge 3% + VAT in the event i sell private or through another broker and i think the 8% + VAT commission if they sell it is steep!

You can negotiate. Most brokers are keen to have your business, so as long as you come up with something that is fair, they will probably buy into it. If once did it that if I sold privately, I would cover their administration costs.

Alternatively just delay putting it with a broker.

Well yes but my boat is in my marina, miles away from where the broker is so i think it is a little unfare. Also i would have to take the boat to them for any viewings. They won't negotiate either even though they reckon they have two parties interested!

Hi Csail,

This is normal. What I did was set a period though I.e. if I sell it privately in the first 8 weeks i pay you 3% + Vat as you have advertised it for me. After 8 weeks I give you nothing as 8 weeks is a reasonable time to sell it!

So put a timeframe on it.

Also 8% is steep in current climate, 6% better.

Cheers

Ok, so if someone buys it from me , why can't i take it of the brokers books, then say not selling now, even if i have sold it?

Your contract with the broker will specify a time period, say 6 months and you have to give a months notice to remove it from there books. However this is can be changed and we recently altered the contract to 3 months with the agreement of the broker.

Funny that - 2 interested parties ... in your boat ... they soon disappear!
