Hi all

Interested in any comments (good or bad) about Marine Force 10 cookers.

I'm re-fitting a boat for long term cruising and need to change cooker. Liked the look of the force 10, but at over £1300, wanted some user comments.

All views welcome

Thanks in advance

Dont' get my missus on the subject of Force 10 cookers, she hates ours with avengence. We bought a burner and oven/grill from new and have had the following problems:

1. Can't have oven/grill on at the same time as a top burner
2. Oven door flies open, we now have a bungy keeping it closed a sea
3. The thermometer hasn't worked form the off

The plus side is that it lights easily, the flameouts work well and it is easily cleaned.

Ours is now 8 years old, the later versions may be better.

we liked the look, but not the price, and bought a techimpex http://www.calormarineshop.co.uk/acatalog/Techimpex.html (- but cheaper at Pumpkin) which seems to have exactly the same features at 30% of the price. Had to reject the first couple fom the manufacturer as they were a bit bent, but the one we have now is great. Lights well - especially with one of those gas light wands. Maybe it will not last as long as the Force 10, but at a price that makes replacement not something I shall really worry about.

The problem of not working with top burner and oven/grill at the same time may be due to having too small a gas feed from cylinder to cooker, the Force 10 burners are higher output than others and need sufficient gas flow.

The oven door on ours is held shut by the handle which operates a very positive door lock.

We used one for over 10 years in our last boat. Apart from having improved pan-holder locking devices, supplied by the then importer in Wales, it was perfect. My wife wishes we still had it eveytime she uses the Smev in our current boat.

I'm disappointed with our SMEV.
Difficult to light grill. Gimble system barely adequate.

I have an Optima, Swedish branded techinpex, which works well but I have two advesre comments. the fiddles, for keeping pots on the cooker in a seaway are pathetic. The side supports for the oven rack are only adequate for light dishes, my wife tried using a cast iron casserole and the shelf fell down. the other comment I have is that the oven burner stoppoed lighting, or rather it went out as soon as you let go the switch> this turned out to be due to the fact that the connection to the knob, from the flame sensor, had not been tightened up properly and when it was tightened it was fine.

I have also used a Force 10 in a friend's boat. I do not think it worked any better and I do not think it was any quicker than my cooker, so I do not understand the comment about needing a higher gas flow. I did note that the grill was very uneven, you had to turn the toast round half way on each side to get an even brwn, which I thought was a bit silly for such an expensive cooker.

On our Force 10 one burner is much bigger than the other and the heat output is more (the handbook is on board so I cannot quote the difference). The grill works fine for one slice of toast, if you do more at one time then you do need to move the grill pan about a bit same as on every other marine cooker we've ever had. We paid £850 for ours, pricey but it is very well made, many others we looked at were very flimsy by comparison. Mind you by domestic cooker standards the price looks even higher!
