Sailing with different people, one hears different commends.

I was brought up with "Ready about ..... Lee O"

I have heard "Helm's alee" several times

On Sunday a newly qualified day skipper said " wheel's to windward" which the was a new one.

What's the norm, if there is one?

If I'm honest I thought it was Lee Ho, that's what I say anyway. :o

I'm with "Ready About?" to which all crew on deck must answer "Aye" and then "Lee Ho".

On my Dayskipper Practical the teacher insisted upon "Helm to lee" - but he was a bit of a public school oik!

There's usually only one other person with me on KS, so formal commands are a bit overkill as long as we both know what's going on. With more people on a bigger boat, I'd say "ready about" and expect an answer from everybody, then make some announcement to indicate we're actually going, which might well be "lee oh" but could instead be "here we go" or something of that nature.

"Helm's a'lee" sounds a little pretentious to me. "Wheel's to windward" is taking the piss, not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that.

Two up (both knowing what to do) - ready? - yes - ok

More on board (often racing); more formally - ready about - await response......lee ho/helms over

i think you just stick with what you grew up with and it's just habit. For me it's

ready about
(wait for afirmation that everyone's ready, put the tea down, etc:))
helm to lee
lee ho

I think it's stuck from teenage dinghy racing days. It's just our routine and everyone's used to it on my boat. btw - I'm am not public school, posh or pretentious !

'Ready about!'

'What on earth are you talking about?'

'I thought we might head off in that direction, if it's alright with you.'

'What do you expect me to do about it?'

'If I push this stick across to the side where that tight rope is, would you mind awfully letting it go and then going over to the other side and pulling in the loose one?'

'No, last time you did that I ended up in the shade and my nail varnish spilled. Why can't we use the engine like normal people?'

With our self tacking headsail there is nothing for anyone to do is I just say "ready about" to warn the crew that their wine needs to be changed to the other hand. ;)

readyabout, lee ho if I have crew, but if no crew its just, "oi dog, move over" because the dog doesnt like sliding off the seats when I tack without warning.
