come for a sail up flag creek -film

nooks and crannies

the slug has certainly taken me to some great little nooks and crannies

it is amazing that they got barges up there

those blokes must have been wizards with their poles for getting around the corners

If they got stuck and bridged across a creek and then had the tide go out they could easily break the back of their vessels

A great many years ago, when Colchester, Rowhedge and Wivenhoe were still working commercial ports, a coaster came down the river a little late, touched the mud and swung broadside on across the river at Rowhedge. Her length was pretty much an exact match for the river's width.

Rather conveniently, its bows were accurately placed for the riverfront terrace of the Anchor pub, so a ladder was put down there as a gangway. As the ebb speeded up, great waterfalls developed at the bow and stern. The pressure of the water on the hull must have been immense.

The next high water was around midnight, so the pub stayed open and pretty much the whole village turned out to see if the ship would get off safely. It was quite a party.

Happily, the ship did make it, but in that situation it was amazing that her back wasn't broken. I can only assume that she settled down into the mud as the water disappeared. Quite a memorable occasion.

Lovely film, as always, Dylan. KTL is a treasure!

not for everyone though

I do get some interesting comments from youtube users

this one came into my inbox

"I really enjoy you work, and you've inspired me to one day (after I retire) produce videos like yours. You show us are parts of the world that we would not ordinarily see. But, I'm going to be critical here; I'm not going to attack peoples' religion. It may be the popular thing to do among your circle of friends & colleagues. However, most of the world is religious, and a large portion are Christians. Your continuous negative comments are off putting to your viewers. But hey, it's your channel."

I think the man has a point and now that I in my twilight years...... maybe I should start being nicer about the great sailor in the sky just in case he ends up being Captain of the next ship I sail for the second part of the journey

However, some of the Saint stories I have come across are very hard to believe - but maybe that is the point.

Ah, but most of the mariners in the world are motorised; does this mean you need to start being nice to stinkpotters too? :D

Love the Video Dylan,
Just a quick note to the producer:)
The Slug went up St Osyth Creek and visited St Osyth PRIORY. Sadly it missed Flag creek entirely.
Sorry to be pedantic but that's just the way I am:p

I did seek local knowledge

the locals argued about the names of the creeks behind Brightlingsea

In the end I chose to go with the qadvice of the older ones - but perhaps they fwere old enough to forget

a bit like Shrewsbury and Shrewsbury

Stour and Stour

Colne and Colne

Hi Dylan,

Just found this one - excellent video.

GrumpyOldGit is correct - Flag creek is further on up B'sea creek. Has a different boatyard / moorings at the top.

St Osyth creek is the one you went up.

Jeremy Clarkson used to describe BMW drivers as co*ks hence the famous saying "a c*ck in a BMW" whereas now he has changed to "a c*ck in an Audi" so on that basis I agree wholeheartedly with our comments about BMW drivers but suggest you add Audi drivers to the truth and reconciliation list
