Am looking at a new boat that has no hot water (was in Med) or heating.

Now want to install h/w and heat but not sure how to go about it.

Stick with a standalone calorifier with 240v going in and feed off the engines combined with standalone Eberspacher/Webasto/Mikuni type for the heating or is there something else like the Eberspacher Combitronic that's a good idea.

The boat is just a 30-odd footer so not huge, one cabin etc...2-4 people on board and not extended cruising.

We have a combined system on a 32ft boat. The calorifier is dual coil - ie 2 internal heating coils plus the mains immersion heater. When plugged into the mains, we operate the 240v immersion heater. When the engine is running, it heats the domestic hot water through one coil. However, once that hot water is used, there is the option of heating from the Eberspacher.

The heater is an Eberspacher D4W which heats hot water. The hot water is piped round the boat similar to a house central heating system and passes through two fan matrix (matrices?) which act like radiators. These each have fans which blow the hot air out through vents. There is also a take off from the hot water that passes through the second coil in the calorifier and again heats the domestic hot water. When running, by a system of valves it is possible to select cabin heating, hot water or both.

Hope this helps

As I'm thinking to install a hot water heating system on the 393, I'm interested in any idea, prejudice, enthusiasm about any heating element, be it static aluminum heater or a matrix type one.
Thanks for any suggestion.

Hi
I am installing a Webasto wet system that heats water and uses the matrix boxes with the 12 volt 2 speed fan on each, also heats a calorifier that can also have an extra coil from the engine cooling system. Great service and practical help from Keto Ltd 55 North Road Poole. e-mail to info@ketogroup.com or phone 01202 715171 ask for Toby. I am fitting mine in a Moody 27.

Matrix fans are not noisy at all. We have one in the heads locker under the sink which feeds outlets to the wet locker and aft cabin, another in the forward cabin locker which feeds outlets to the main and forward cabin. These are switched independently so you can have one or the other or both. They each have their own thermostat for temp control.

I agree its perhaps overkill for your planned use but it was how the boat came when we bought it. I suppose it gives the ultimate flexibility. The boat was built with extended cruising in mind.
