I am looking to replace my Lofrans manual windless with a standard mooring cleat.
I would also like to have two smaller mooring cleats on the toerail on the bow........but I already have two fairleads in these positions which to be honest are also useful.
So, what I need is a combined mooring cleat which also has a fairlead...........
Does anyone know if such an item exists, and if so, where can I get them?

Thanks.

The fixing of a mooring cleat and the fixing of a fairlead are quite different propositions. I don't know the way the toerail is fixed on a Jag but you are going to need to through bolt the cleat. I would have thought a central cleat is a much better idea. Wot's wrong with the Windlass?

NOoooooooo!

I looked at some of those when I wanted to install midship cleats on narrow side-decks and would've made the mistake of buying them, had I not met someone who'd already made the mistake, just in time.

The crux is in the manufacturers description; they are 'water RESISTANT' which is just about OK if you're on the river; just don't direct a hose directly at them. Offshore though, they'll look a good idea until the first windward beat and the seas break over the bow your previously water-tight deck (even with the optional plastic bucket they sell for them) will allow a steady stream of drips into the saloon below.

The MG Spring 25 has combined cleats and fairleads. I have no idea who made them or where you would get them from now. Could be worth talking to Northshore Yachts who made the last Springs. The early ones were made by Jaguar. I have looked through my pictures, but can't find one that shows the cleats clearly.

An optional drainage receptacle mounts below the cleat to drain off water.

[/ QUOTE ] says it all - they supply a drainage bucket for their through deck fitting. Fills you with confidence!

I will have one central cleat on the bow, which I will use when anchoring etc. and when tying up to my swinging mooring....with the two lines running through the existing bow fairleads.
However, I would also like two smaller mooring cleats for when tying up to pontoons etc.
I haven't got room for both, so if I can find a combined version I would be very happy.
There is nothing wrong with the windlass it's virtually brand new, but I don't use it, it's too big for the boat and just gets in the way............
It'll be going on Ebay shortly.........

Ahh, that's interesting thanks. At least I know that they do (or did) exist. I think there are a couple of MG Springs local to me, so I'll try and take a look to see if they have some fitted.
I might give Northshore yachts a try.........thanks for the suggestion.
If all else fails I might try and get some made......

The Vancouver 27 (Northshore still making as the Vancouver 28) have a fabulous system whereby, in the same way as the jib-sheet car slides up and down its track, also mounted on the same track (aft of the car) is an adjustable-position cleat. The track is mounted atop the toe-rail.

Whilst sailing, the cleat is pulled right aft towards the cockpit so the jib-sheet car's position can be optimised. When coming alongside to dock, the cleat can be positioned close to the cockpit or further forward for single-handed initial securing to the dock, then later positioned amidships for springs.

I have cleats on my genoa tracks for use amidships - made by Barton. Not reaaly suitable for foredecks. Surprised you can't fit additional cleats on the foredeck as this is very common. On my 26 ft boat I have a proper samson post in the middle where you will be putting your anchor cleat and two nine inch cleats about 4 inches in from the toerail with fairleads on top of the rail.

On my J27 when I had it, I had a large central cleat and then cleats on the sidedeck about halfway along the deck. The side cleats were a Pain in the A**** as you always stubbed your toes on them! To be fair they could have been moved but I never got round to it. From memory I would have thought you could have fitted a couple of side cleats on the foredeck - 6" cleats would be enough, but make sure you fit substantial backing pads.

We have centre cleats that could be described thus....

Hopefully you can make one out at the bottom of this picture - it's like a rather chunky normal cleat, but with a slot in the top. No idea where to get them from though.

(Not a picture of Ayla, but the only one I've got showing this cleat)

Thanks misterg, that's the type of cleat I'm looking for..............just got to try and find someone who still makes / sells them.

Thanks too Rogershaw, that type of cleat / bollard would do the job, are they custom made? If I can't find anything 'off the shelf' I'll have to get something made, and that has given me some idea's. I would need to scale it down somewhat to fit my bow though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've 'doodled' this in my CAD system.......this type of thing would be ideal:

Yes

2 bits of tube, 1 bit of solid rod, a bent plate and some offcuts.
