Does anybody know of a combined AIS and radar set for a small boat?

A great idea if its either/or or a comined radar/ chartplotter with the AIS ovelayed on the chart plotter. The problem of overlay on radar is correlating the radar contacts to the AIS. Research on this was carried on big ship i.e. a steady radar platform and lots of radiated power, and was still considered as/more unreliable as ARPA with target swaps.

This would be similar in principle to the secondary radar systems used by airports, however in this case the ground interogates the aircraft and recieves a reply, this means that there is a range and bearing to assist in the correlating.

Not saying its not possible and agree similar idea to secondary radar, but secondary radar sits still and doesn't have to contend with sea clutter and the yawing of a small vessel etc. - There was research done for the MCA which showed correlation wasn't too hot and there were also a lot of other human interface issues e.g. info overload with ARPA also running and which do you use when they disagree....

There is a PC based solution. Nobeltec has a RadarPC system which can overlay radar on to a electronic chart and also display AIS targets.

Having not used RADAR, I though it might be an easy way to distinguish targets from clutter. All seems so easy when you know bugger-all eh?

thanks for replies.
