Colvic 20 I am totally renovating stripped down to the bare hull current running gear Perkins prima 60hp with penta 270 outdrive any good I don’t know not been in the water yet
Could anyone advise me if a hurth hbw 20 -15h gearbox
Will it fit the prima engine
Thinking of going back to conventional layout shaft and prop hope someone can help thanks

Hi Sean & welcome to the forum,

I don't know about the gearbox but would stick with what you've got if it works - you can test using a hose either directly into the water strainer or disconnect the cooling water feed, put it in a bucket with your hose feeding the bucket...

Changing from an outdrive to a conventional shaft is a major job. You will need to build new engine beds further forward, build in a stern tube for the shaft and prop and build a rudder. Far more work and money than is justified for such a boat. Nothing fundamentally wrong with the 270 provided it is regularly serviced, although it was an odd choice to fit this in the first place.

Thanks for your advice think there was a lister and shaft originally taken out for some reason I was thinking of putting it to a commercial spec local fisherman have no faith in the outdrive has they get hot plus more chance to get nets tangled on drive gear when setting nets over the stern

Suspect the Lister was removed and the Prima/sterndrive installed in the vain hope that the boat will go faster. It is a displacement hull and does not need 50+hp. Stendrives are indeed inappropriate for this boat and that sort of usage, so the only question is whether it is worth the cost and effort to revert to shaft drive.. Choice of gearbox and reduction ratio will depend on what size propeller you can swing. Hurth boxes are expensive new and there are cheaper alternatives.

Thanks for the info lot of work if I go down that route but I’m not afraid to go at it
I think the boat would be more balanced with the engine central we’re it was initially designed to be
Thankyou

I have a recollection of Volvo dealer doing a run of these many years ago as a replacement for AQD21
colin and victor business was to build hulls and would use their buying power to get discounts which they passed on although I don’t remember much in the way of hull discounts
