ello,

I have a friend looking at a 1981 Colvic salty Pup (I think a smaller version of the Salty Dog).

This one has tripple keels, which have been extended.

He currently has a Snapdragon 670, but wants something stiffer with better sailing characteristics.

Does anyone know anything about the salty pup, especially how they sail, or if not then colvics in general?

Any opinions would be helpful

Thanks

Hello Bife
I have a Colvic Watson 24' Motorsailor and would not change her for anything.
It depends on what you want,Colvic motor sailors are not racing yachts!
On a very good day I might get 6 knots under full sail, but I am not in a hurry to get anywhere fast.
On the plus side they are bullet proof construction and ideal for the East coast weather as I sail her all year round.
Mine does not have bilge keels and I personally think she sails better but does 'roll' a bit.
CW's come in 23'-6",26', and 34'
On the stern of most CW's you will find a 'hull build number' so this can be checked out, this does not confirm however when the boat was completed/launched.
Hope this helps,if you want an amusing story of buying one drop me a line and I will send it.

Good luck
Mike

Beamy, modern-styled small sailing cruiser - no relation whatsoever to the CW motor sailers.

Triple keels is very odd though: they were built as twin keel or fin keel boats. Designed by Peter Milne, so the sailing performance of standard boats is fairly good - he was not known for slow boats. I can only assume someone has added bilge keels to a fin-keeler, which is not going to help performance, but may not ruin it.
