Colregs revisited

Trolls are supposed to make random alterations of course until they either hit something or catch a submarine in their nets.

Am afraid so /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Possibly the situation has lost something in my description....... what contributed to my decision to hold a steady course and speed was also the feeling (admitedly not based on any evidence!) that he was trying to "bully" his way acrross our bow, using the motor gives way to sail rule, when he had the whole bay to play with and could very very easily have just slipped behind us. Whilst I would hesitate to say he was "overtaking" he would have crossed our bow (or slightly before it /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) having approach from our starboard side, from an angle around 45% and nowwhere near 90%. (which would have been a "no brainer") He came accross as just plain rude /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The point I was also trying to make was that "just" because someone is under sail not to assume that the other vessel (Mobo or Yacht) is going to alter course to accomadate "your" right of way, whatever the fine print of the Colregs say, when early on you have the option of making a simple and minor course correction, rather than pressing on to try and prove the point. Apart from some folk not knowing all / any of the colregs, (or not having access to this forum at the right time to debate the finer points /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) more than enough proceed on the "my boats bigger than yours" / "my boats more expensive that yours" rules.

I should also point out that although I am also a "Yachtie", with plenty of time on the stinkpots, my usual MO when under motor and approaching a sailing boat is to try and pass astern of them unless I KNOW I can pass "well" in front of their bow.

The good news is that I don't drink much anymore /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
