I've often thought that the Colregs should be changed to provide a range of day shapes for anchors, according to what the vessel has deployed. eg a danforth shape for a danforth, etc.

With the advent of widely accepted technology, maybe it would be better if all vessels regardless of size are compelled to install an AIS transponder which will transmit their position. This data will include a code for what anchor has been deployed and any dragging would be apparent from the COG.

a sound idea, what?

You could take it further because obviously when two boats meet at sea the one with the smaller, less-prominent anchor on it's bow is the give way boat, so there should be a day shape for each.

Flexible neon lights sound just the thing. You could have a range of colours to outline the anchor. At one end of the scale you could have yellow for give way to anything even if the AIS says it's still over the horizon at anchor through to purple meaning I'm coming through come hell or high water.

Perhaps your suggested shapes should also have the length of scope indicated on them, and fly code flags indicating time of departure .... oh and the weight of anchor .... and another shape at the stern if using a kedge or moor :):):)

I suppose different colour icon on the screen will identify if it is galvanised, stainless or painted anchor?

Not a bad idea but would be better if the AIS readout also showed what sort of Ensign the boat has!

You don't need any form of non enviornmetally friedly electric lights on anchors. I believe seahorses glow in the dark for a few days.
