It seems even the Royal Navy has problems interpreting the COLREGS, HMS's Argyll and Kent managed to run into each other off Plymouth last Thursday. See the Sky News website here. What hope is there for the rest of us if the Navy can't get it right? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

When I visited Ark Royal a few years ago pinned up above the chart table was the freebie from PBO,"Guide to IALA bouyage".
Caused me some concern and cheered me up at the same time!

Let me explain the COL regs in simple terms - the smaller vessel gives way.
Now I really don't give a shit if you accept this or not but it is a fact of life despite the regulations.
BE WARNED! If you are smaller than me then get the "F" out of my way /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Stay put when I hit you!

From my interpretation of the news, this had absolutely nothing to do with Colregs. I have seen similar events happen before, and would anticipate that on this occasion the two ships were close alongside each other doing a personnel transfer via a rope stretched between the two ships. If the ships get a tad too close the are enormous problems caused by the interaction of the pressure waves at the bow and stern of the ships. During a defence college demonstration there is a tendency to try to put on a show ,by being as close as possible, and thus there is a very thin line between great show and crunch!

from the sky news photo it looks as though the damage was severe, you've got to whack a frigate pretty hard to make it look like a landing craft!

I know it really didn't have anything to do with COLREGS, I guess you couldn't see my tongue in my cheek, but with Jimi's COLREGS thread going strong I couldn't resist. Anyway, it's always satisfying to see the Navy screw things up occasionally. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: Every few years

a naval officer draws the short straw and has to go out and biff his boat.

The guy who hit tower bridge, or a reef in Australia comes to mind. It's to make us all feel better and say "well if the Navy can get into scrapes".

My eternal gratitude goes to a naval captain who hit a rock in a Norwegian fjord while transiting at night. At very nearly the same time I did exactly the same thing.

Therein lies the problem

Let me explain the COL regs in simple terms - the smaller vessel gives way

As these were both Type 23 frigates it an be anticipated that, give or take 10 metres to allow for the shipyard misreading the plans and/or shrinkage in the wash, they were the same size. Therefore neither was the give way ship: the result - two type 23 dodgem cars.
