Any theories on how a 40' power cruiser managed to collide with The Bridge buoy last night while on a delivery trip from Lymington to Weymouth? I believe viz. was excellent, so were they just following waypoints without a) checking the locations of the waypoints and b) just not looking where they were going in spite of being in a restricted and well marked channel?

It was another rescue for the Yarmouth Lifeboat with the CG chopper on hand to take the IR pictures shown on the local TV news.

My thought exactly, unless the waypoint was else where and the route went through the Bridge Buoy. Either way the result is the same !
Maybe the skipper of the boat would like to comment ......

A couple of years back our previous boat made an immediate 90 deg turn to starboard on autopilot when my mobile phone rang, I thought it was coincidence but it happened twice more, fortunately at just 6kts in very clear space. For that to happen at 30kts on a big powerboat doesn't bear thinking about! Another reason for having the damn things switched off.

Maybe they just weren't looking, and if that sounds daft, check this out.

An old acquaintance of mine who now lives up in Scotland was taking a 40ft motor boat across Lake Erie when he lived and worked as a doctor in the US. The night before, he and his wife had a bit of a hooley and woke up with the mother of all hangovers. So they calculated the distance of the passage, set the speed of the boat, set the autopilot to required destination and.....went back to sleep for the entire journey, only to be woken up by an alarm clock.

Seriously!

Each of these stories is true

1. A bulk carrier owned in Hong Kong and a container ship owned in Taiwan collided precisely end on, in broad daylight, hundreds of miles from land, in mid-Pacific. Neither sank, because the collision bulkheads held, but they decelerated rather abruptly! I have a photo of the container ship somewhere - talk about "crumple zones"!

2. An offshore supply boat and a fishing boat collided off Aberdeen, fine calm summer's day, good visibility.

I was involved in the investigation of both those cases, this next one I only heard about.

3. Two oil company tankers collided, again end on, off the coast of Spain, at about 01.00. This was years ago, in the days of twiddle the dials Decca. Turned out both 2/0's had the same night orders, "Get a good Decca fix", because the chain ended about there, and the northbound tanker was picking it up whilst the southbound one was losing it. So both 2/O's were in the separate chart rooms fiddling with dials, and both had said to the lookout, "Be with you in a minute!"
