None of the above- this (reportedly) happened to an aquaintance of mine- they picked it up , called coastguard/police, handed it over on arrival- and then were banged up for hours/overnight while the police checked things out. Apparently it had been placed there by the police as a sting..

We had something similar many years ago. We passed a suspicious looking black plastic parcel floating mid Channel on our way to France but decided that a) nasty peeps might be watching us from the other boats we could see b) explaining it to French Customs would lose us a lot of time and we were only going for the weekend. We chose to pass on by, probably not very good citizenlike. The option of calling HMCG by VHF would probably have had us either returning with the parcel or carrying on with it and again spending a day with les Douaniers.

Came across something similar about 4 miles off Achil Head, off the remote west of Ireland. A *big* Dayglo trawler fender on a flat sea, so we motored up with the intention of recycling it. I was on foredeck with the boathook, and as we came close, I noticed the rope snaking down into the depths - and the suitcase-sized container attached about 6 feet down, all encased in shimmering polythene.
I waved my helmsman away. Whoever owned that was probably watching through powerful binos from something with a big engine. Or the Guardai were watching from something with a big engine..... Either way, it was not in our interests to get more curious. We left it there, and a few days later, once many safe miles from the scene, reported it - with lat and long - on the Customs Drugs hotline 0800 595000 - and the duty guy couldn't quite stifle his yawns!
"Don't get involved" was the message he confirmed. "Leave such stuff strictly alone. Don't imagine it's lost. Once you touch it, you will attract the attentions of its illegal owners AND us. Don't know who are worse.....", he mused.
