Collision In Fog

I just saw the merchant vessel Covenant run down a sailing boat in fog. Luckily the sailor was unhurt, and managed to scale the side of the ship and climb to safety, whereupon he was threatened with being thrown back by the conniving and profit-driven Master. Luckily the sailor, Alan Breck, had been following the advice on this forum and was carrying a (big) knife, which he used to buy some negotiating time. The evil ship's captain then tried to poison him, and blagged 70 guineas off him for a passage to France. Steep by any measure.
I look forward to a full and frank report in next month's YM about this incident, and trust that it as been fully reported under the new merchant shipping legislation. I also hope that Alan Breck was properly insured. He should have a trustworthy and reliable witness in the shape of David Balfour. Riach, the navigator of the Covenant, should start looking for a new job, on the beach, as soon as possible, because his failure to recommend a reduction of speed and total disregard for the infomation available to him by radar, GPS and AIS was clearly a contributing factor in this collision. However, Alan Breck was not making any sound signals, and clearly had little understanding of Rule 19. It would appear that he was stopped when the collision took place, having already altered course towards the Covenant.
I suspect that, judging by the way the Covenant is run, she may well founder next week, before wee Davey can be sold as a slave. He might then make his way back to claim his inheritance. Time will tell.

All kinds o' catabatic winds etc. We had everything that week, f8 and 9.5 knots etc little rain lots of sun, very little tacking as the wind was where we wanted it most of the time. hope to go back this October too and do DS, if I can get time to get the theory out of the way.
