Collecting old ordnance

Watching a news item about a farm building fire on the Naze.
Bomb disposal were called in to check that a quantity of land mines, shells and ammunition were safe before the area was re-opened.
I believe they were all dummies or de-activated, but aren't these strange things to collect?

I have 2 4 inch naval shell cases to keep my umbrellas in.....

Cezembre is an island off St Malo,strictly off limits to visitors as it is literally knee deep in live rounds etc from 1945.
But they used to take boatloads of children for day trips believe or not,and we all brought back lots,especially 20mm live rounds (Oerlikon gun I believe). We used to bring them in to school and hit them with rocks,but the priming caps must have been damp. Then we hammered out the lead bullet,emptied out the cordite,which burned with a pretty coloured flame! We were 11-12 yrs old, all good clean fun

Probably .303 inch or 50 cal. tracer. The fact that you are still here to tell the story supports the supposition!!

My Mother has quite a collection of shell cases. Can't recall where they came from guv honest

Not likely; anything over 6" will be breech loading and doesn't use a casing, just bags of propellant.

A "friend" rolleyes also has a selection of black powder cannons.......... great at new year!!!!
