I have a coil with odd (to me) low tension circuit terminals, one is a spade connection, the other is a 'post' connection. Which one is the negative terminal?
It is a Delco Remy 12v coil, the only markings are the manufacturers name and the figures 0643 227.

I doubt it will matter, as it's just a transformer anyway. You will probably find, the post has had the spade terminal removed.

Yup. the spades were attached to the threaded posts with nuts. It may be that your coil needs a ballast resistor (most Deco Remy coils did) in which case the resistor may have bolted onto the bare post you have. If electrical circuit is negative earth then the ballast resistor would have been on the positive post. Most coils have the polarity cast into the plastic end piece next to the terminals. If the coil is stamped as 12v it won't need a ballast resistor.
