How different are electric ignition coils?

I ask because a coil system was fitted to a vire 7, (the magneto high tension circuit bypassed, a standard DIY upgrade, so I am told) but the coil is missing. Finding a replacement coil has not been easy so far as the mechanics I speak to seem to be a little unsure , (Grumpy Old Man rant: begin) probably because they all seem to be under 13 years of age and are more concerned with how to fit alloy wheels and spoilers onto corsas and clios. (Grumpy Old Man rant: end)

You need to know the correct voltage. Measure between + feed to coil & earth with the ign switched on. If its 12V then you need a 12V coil. If it's 9V then you need a ballasted coil & ballast res. Unless of course it's a 6V for which you need a 6V.

Just checked the tech specs, and it is 6v. So any 6v coil? or do the 6v coils vary some other way?

Most vires are 12volt if fitted with a starter the mod only uses the contact breakers to switch the supply to the coil as the engine rotates so if the battery supply ( must have because you are no longer using the mag. for the spark) is 12v use a 12v coil. Just about anything will do. (car breakers)
