Apart from all the jovial obvious solutions - has anyone fitted a serious cockpit shower (ie plumbed in) and if so any recommendations? The Whale variant looks nice (!) but requires a huge cavern be cut through the hull which is not something I really want to do so are there any others people can recommend?

Take a look at these guys: http://www.penguineng.com/

we purchased a shower head, housing and hose from them a few years ago at the Southampton Boat show - we only use the cold water supply (brr) ... but didn't feel it justified having the larger installation of a mixer tap ... was cheap too - ~ £10 + a stopvalve, some hose and a splitter - all in all, less than £30 with self installation ...

I fitted a shower pump, pressure tank and hose with garden variety shower head into a cockpit locker. No need to cut holes if you'd rather not.

According to your bio, you probably have enough room to install a shower, but on a smaller boat, such as mine, there is an excellent alternative on page 135 of June's PBO. It consists of a plastic milk bottle with a perforated lid. Fill it with cold/warm/hot water and hey presto!
As I said, more for the smaller boat, and also more for the quick rinse off after a swim...but a handy back-up as well?
