The idiot paying for Wild Otter put his elbow through the cockpit hood this afternnoon. Any suggestions for repairers/replacers in the Levington area? Usual requirements: quality, speed (we're away for a few days from next Saturday), cost

Well just be extra careful about what you are ordering. I had my sprayhood windows replaced and when it came back it would no longer fit. I couldn't get it to rig up to its original height. Bloke from repair place comes along and applies a heat lamp and a lot of pull and push and, hey presto, it fits. Soon as I fold it down, it won't go back up again. Bloke says you should keep it up all the time. I don't do this as the dinghy stores on the coachroof. Bloke indifferent to my insistence that it did work before he fixed it. To his credit, he did come down and take a look and spend about an hour on board; later he took it back and fitted some internal beefing up (for free) which didn't in fact help. Was adamant that the windows had been cut perfectly, and to be fair I couldn't fault the method he described. However, I was left with a £200 bill (including cleaning) and a sprayhood that doesn't rig up nice and taut when I want to erect it. And when it's up I can't see through the windows as they are all stretched out diagonally. Next time I would be very clear and say it is important that it can be retracted and erected easily without the need for a workout and a heat lamp.

I have had good canvas work done by Sail & Cover at Woolverstone, but not a window job. Above job was done but an outfit with an otherwise very good rep in the Harwich area.

I've replaced windows in sprayhoods before now and they have been fine. The secret is to sew on the new window before removing the old. I've done two like this and had no problem. Also used doublesided tape to fix the new window before sewing.

Quantum Sails at levington do spray hoods.
Also Suffolk Sails at Woodbridge - a bit cheaper. but good.

Both have done sail and canvas work for me in the past and both to my satisfaction.
