Difficult question without knowing type of boat and sailing ground.
FWIW on 30 foot sailing boat which came with 7 foot cockpit cushions,I ditched them in favour of 6x18" Sq cushions bought at boat jumble.
Reasons;
7 foot cushions difficult to stow.
Small cushions gave more flexibility(one under,one for back)
Easier to take home and clean.
We're contemplating the same at present. As already said we need some thing easy to store. Have thought about dense polyethylen (I think) doubles as fenders too! Let us know what u decide/find
When I had mine made in Timor it was so cheap I was able to have the foam covered first in plastic and then nice material over that - when the cushions get wet the water does not get into the foam....
Thickness is a consideration. My boat came with fitted cockpit cushions which are about 3" thick and are very comfortable. They're great for lounging around but, unfortunately, they're canvas-covered and so aren't very practical on long trips in wet weather.
Some of the nicest-looking waterproof cockpit cushions I've seen are from BottomSiders.
I have just ordered some. Suggest you research "reticulating foam", this puts the price up but when the cushions become damp with salt water you can take the foam out and rinse it through.
1. Design cushions in sections of a size which you can fit in an allocated stowage space.
2. Manufacture using 2" thick high density foam. This makes them heavy so they stay in the intended place and also don't make them dangerous or too fragile to be trodden on
3. Would highly recommend Quay Sails, Poole, as a a good value high quality manufacturer offering a good range of PVC covering material.
