\"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

Applying Blakes a/f recently, with a foam roller, produced what looked like cobwebs as the paint was rolled on. Mostly these blew away in the wind. I have used Blakes a/f for 12 years and never noticed seen this happen before.

The advice from other boatowners was: "don't worry about it, just slap it on and go sailing". Fair enough, but I'd like to know what causes this effect. Anyone know?

ps I didn't notice any spiders about in the boat yard.

Re: \"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

I noticed the same last year with Cruising Performer, and put it down to the rollers moulting- it didn't cause a problem

Re: \"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

It's been a regular experience for me until I gave up on Blake's. Doesn't seem to be a problem. I think something interacting with the foam of the roller

Re: \"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

Its something to do with the paint composition, i have found this for years using their deck paint. Always worse when windy.
Worked out that going slowly to apply then only backwards strokes with the roller to finish. Not as important on the antifoul though.

Re: \"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

I've noticed this with Cruiser Performer. I use "wool" rollers, I don't think they are the cause. I think that it's more to do with rapid drying of the very fine droplets thrown off the roller. Blakes seems rather thinner than many A/F's, and may be more prone to this. FWIIW, it is possible to produce quantities of such cobwebs if paint spraying with the wrong conditions.

Thanks for the reassuring replies. I won't worry about the cobwebs anymore but just hope I don't see any spiders. I don't do spiders /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: \"Cobwebs\" in antifoul

You need to get a "Spidabuster" from Lakeland plastics.

Sucks up spiders and other scary invertebrates, and allows you release them humanely outside - or whatever /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I didn't want to upset the Animal Rights lot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is the "whatever" however /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
