Can anyone tell me if ,when an external speaker is plugged in to this set, will the internal speaker be muted? The handbook refers to the socket on the back of the set as "External Speaker and PA Jack, but no info on whether or not it is additional to the internal speaker or an alternative.

The cobra MR F75 has its internal speaker in the fist mike, when you plug in the external speaker it is in addition to the internal speaker.

I do not know about the F55

On most sets the internal speaker should remain on or be the default if there is an option.
After all what is the use of being on the VHF in the saloon/chart table area next to your charts and chart plotter and not being able to hear any replies.
Found this out on my Raymarine 45 a couple of weeks ago, internal speaker had stopped working, checked wirng diagram and it should output to both internal and external speaker.

Luckily a crew member was in the cockpit whilst I was in the saloon and he relayed the reply. At first I thought that the VHF had completely packed in.

I carry a Hand Held Icom M33 (the waterproof buoyant one) as a back up just in case.

Recent threads have talked about liferafts (got one) and lifejackets (got some new ones) but in my opinion a back up H/H vhf should be top of the shopping list as it could be your only means of communcation if you lose the onboard electrics (which can happen) Better to have a h/h and call up a tow rather than be setting off flares.
(Yes I realise that this all depends on where you sail and how far out you go)
