Thinking about having my boat here in a bit of a upturn of events so if anyone has anything good or bad to say about it I'm all ears (or eyes in the case of this forum :))

Also reading in the reeds marina guide its suggest access to holes bay is hw+-5 but chart depth looks ok? And the almanac does not mention this

Finally distance to the open sea, is it a bit far or is it barable?

boating will be dominated by bridge time tables going out and coming back!! After along day out, queuing for the bridges to be opened with boaters of differing experience can be quite stressful!!

Not good if you want to sail whenever it takes your fancy. Everything revolves around the bridges which is OK if you sail weekends only or longer periods. time to harbour entrance from leaving berth assuming not against the flood tide, allow 2 hours.

Better to get a mooring in the harbour although marina berths are hard to come by and expensive. Most are owned by clubs with long waiting lists for berths, but two main clubs will accept new members and usually have swinging moorings with access to the marina.

I roughly had it has 3 miles didn't realise it was that far! Bridges open on the hour which is quite flexible I thought

Which clubs are these?

Am currently at Davis's in Holes Bay but in a small motorboat which can navigate the bridges at most tides. This makes life in the bay much easier.
As others have said, the bridges can be a pain but my experience is its mainly on a busy weekend when everyone is comming back in.
It takes me roughly 1 hour to reach the harbour entrance from my berth, (slightly quicker in the winter when the speed limit is relaxed)
Holes bay works for me, it's easy to get to down the A350. If I had a sailing boat I'm not sure I would be so keen on it thou.

It is not necessarily the frequency of the bridges and the hour is only at peak times - not sure what the timing will be when the old bridge is back in operation, but the time waiting for one bridge to open, then for the other plus the time to transit at busy times. You need to leave your berth 20-30 minutes before the bridge opens and transit time much the same, so typically around an hour to the main channel.

The two big clubs are Parkstone and Poole, which I belong to. Both have marinas and swinging moorings. For obvious reasons I think Poole is better. I live 15 minutes away and it takes me around 40 minutes from home to out in the harbour. A little longer with a swinging mooring. There are vacancies for members - only 2 weeks ago we had an open day for prospective members. Longish waiting list for marina berths, but they are cheap when you get there!

Have a look on the website www.pooleyc.co.uk and give the office a call if interested.
