Rather than continue hijacking someone elses thread, I started another.
Whats the situation with the bridge, how often does it lift etc
Can you fish in poole harbour, is there anywhere to anchor up in the harbour for a 42ft boat safely overnight ?Anything to watch out for in the harbour, other than ferry and the entrance?

Or you could ask on the UK's friendliest boating forum? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I have no idea to the answers you seek, but I'm sure someone will be along in a minute. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have you heard of an almanac? You will get all the answers you need. Essential reading for those going to places they don't know.

IS this kind of reply necessary or did someone bite your arse today !!!!!!

I'm not an expert on Poole either, but been there a good few times. Theres loads of places to anchor. But as rudely said by the scrubber above, an almanac or cruising guide would be v ery usefull.

Bridge Lifts here

Worth keeping channel 14 on the VHF as there are often extra lifts for commercial traffic, Lifeboats etc.

Plenty of places to moor up overnight in the Harbour, South Deep, Arne, Pottery Pier to name a few. Also just down the coast is Studland where you will find a lot of people anchoring in the summer (Bit over rated IMHO as you can get an annoying swell)

You can fish in the harbour and Bass can be caught near the entrance. Anchoring or Drift fishing is not allowed in the channel though

Look out for boaters who have not read the collision regs or harbour regs esp. on a summer Sunday or Bank Holiday!

you are absolutely correct scrubba......

but nothing beats a bit of "local" knowledge....

which is partly what these fora are all about /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I think RIN just about sums up the situation best of all, I have been at Cobbs since 1983 and I am still there. The best thing about the area is that whatever the weather is doing there is always somewhere in the harbour you can tuck in out of the way, as I have said many times before there are some (quite a lot of) people who don't even know there is an enterance to the harbour that goes to the open sea (no names mentioned- CQCC). Every one to their own, I like to be out and about.
There are any places to anchor out over night in and outside the harbour and they are all free - should I have said that?
Can't speak about the fishing but then I not sure if my fishing friends can either, they buy the bait to keep the fish well fed!!
The only pain is of course the bridge but you just learn to live with it, not sure about the 2nd one, although I noticed on Sunday that Sunseekers had a large boat stored in the area of the old dry stacking that had to close at the end of last season, but thats another story.
Hope that is of some help.

Steve

as steve said, loads places to find shelter
bass can be found by the old blue chain ferry
try google earth
2nd bridge seems to be on hold because council and developers cant agree numbers
shallows everywhere, in 42 footer you'll find blood alley could be problematic unless highish water
long island would be great place to overnight
a colleague of mine spent his first 2 years at cobbs and never made it past the entrance! so much to explore

So are you allowed to beach or anchor up on the Arne island or that area. I've looked on google earth and it looks a delightful place to stay coming out from, Wareham River, is it? I would truly love to overnight around that area or even camp on what looks like little beach areas.

If anyone can shed more light on this area, please do say,i thankyou now :-)

I also noticed a couple of boat storage areas leading directly to the river. Does anyone know about these please

There are places around there that you can anchor up but most seem to prefer South Deep or Blood Alley round the back of Brownsea, if only 'cos your further away from the water ski area and a bit more sheltered. If there's any North or West in the wind the anchorage to the west of Brownsea can be a little bit lumpy sometimes for a small boat.

If you look at the map in Solitaire's link you'll see that west of Arne Island is outside the quiet area, which makes a big difference in summer.

There's no reason you can't go all the way up to Wareham if you watch the tides, unless you draw more than a few feet. Get the timing right though and it's a very pleasant trip and you can get out on the flood as the current's not that strong. It was because of Solitaire that we decided to take a 3'8" draft bilge keeler up to Wareham after he went over the run in detail to another forumite on a course a year or so ago. Thank you David, though I was sweating a bit a couple of times.

Andy, I've worked in and around the Harbour for over 10 years and although I don't know too much about the fishing side of things I can say that there are plenty of places to anchor and overnight in the harbour and in fact you could enjoy most of a season without leaving the harbour. The things to watch out for in the high season are the volume of traffic, the chain ferry at the entrance and also there are a lot of shallow area's which might catch out a 42 footer if you don't know about them. I'm not trying to scrounge a ride as I have my own boat but if it would help I'm always happy to get afloat and show you around the harbour one day. PM me if you like.. cheers Iain

I heard somewhere the average water depth over the whole harbour is 18 inches. Don't know if this is correct but it means that outside the channels at low tide you need to very careful not to run aground.

I believe you are correct that the average depth is 18 inches...thats probably at chart datum but, yes, you do have to know what you are doing if you leave the main channels... cheers Iain

Cheers chaps , keep it coming........or maybe not as from November the harbour may become a boat park and marinas will have a 10 year waiting list.Cobbs to poole Harbour and back = not much diesel used! I have 2 500 litre tanks, so that might last a bit.
I anchored in Poole Harbour last year and was glued to the depth log. Stirred up some mud in places!!!I am looking forward to exploring it.

Hi Gilly1. The two boat yards and slipways are Ridge Wharf and Redclyffe. There is even a small Yacht club further up the river. The top end of the harbour can be shallow but quite easy to find your way around as the posts and bouys have been upgraded.
Boats of up to 40' have moorings in the river and the ferries go right up to the quay so it cant be that bad!
As for landing and anchoring around the Arne peninsula and the top islands people do it and seem to be tolerated although a lot of it is designated as SSI.
PM if you want any specifics. Cheers Simon.
