I just asked this question in the ' Disappointed in Cobb' thread, but thought it was probably better to ask a fresh q. Sorry for the duplication.

I've just bought a Cobb thanks to trusted recommendation. I assume the long-term owners have found the best places to get the cobblestones - please do share. Amazon? Nauticalia? Cobb Shop direct?

Shall we go for the standard briquettes? the ultra quick? the coconut ones? Lots to choose from. Please pass on your best results.

We are about to send off our Wallas oven for repair, so expect to be trying it out with vigour!

thanks

I did try the cobblestones once and found that they didn't get hot enough, although I understand there are different types, some better than others.

In my experience the best briquettes I've used are ones called Heat Beads, available in some supermarkets and garden centres. 5 or 6 of those is enough to cook quite a lot.

To be honest, whilst I really like my Cobb, and am impressed at how well it cooks, I'm less enamoured with the cleaning afterwards. As such, I now tend to use the disposable bbq's, although they can be a mixed bag too. Of the various ones I've tried, the £2 a go Sainsbury's ones are by far the best. They light easily, burn evenly, get very hot, and last for 2 or 3 hours. Best of all there's no clean up afterwards.

We get ours from Lakeland. Cleaned out the stock in Truro before we came back out to Greece. We've used standard briquettes and lump charcoal as well, good results but the usual time for it to get hot. The cobble stones are ready to cook so quickly it almost better than gas. Roasted a chicken the other day to the envy of the neighbours in yard here in Preveza.
