Coaxial plug issues on Nasa Marine clipper duet...

I seem to have annual connection issues with the coaxial plug into the back of my clipper duet. I'm a novice electrician, do I need to use solder to make a decent new plug?

I tried to solder the wee wire into the centra pin once - ended up just melting the nylon surround…

Now I just put it in then use self amalgamating tape to hold the cable
Securely into the plug.

Coax plugs really are a terrible design!
