I have a Yanmar saildrive with an alloy propeller fitted. The entire propeller is coated in a black plastic coating that seems to have been professionally done due to the neatness of the edges around the hub where the bolt secures it to the shaft.

Unfortunately some of the coating has come off exposing the metal beneath and started to corrode. It is also bubbling a little at the base of each blade (two bladed prop)

Could anyone suggest the best course of action. Should I remove the entire coating and treat the prop or leave it as is or strip and paint with something else.

Any advise or experiences of similar would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

I had a similar problem on my 2-bladed prop two years ago. I just used emery paper, and then applied three coats of International Trilux black paint..........and I'm pleased to say the prop condition was excellent last winter.

Hope this helps.

Brgds, Allan

Thanks Allan

Is that emery cloth to just the area where the coating has come off or remove whole coating then paint entire prop?

To be totally thorough....

you should use a two part zinc chromate primer on the bare metal once you have removed all the corrosion and obtained an oxide free bright finish. Then touch up the missing patches. It isn't necessary to completely remove all of the paint, unless you are particularly fussy about having unseen underwater items looking pristine.
