The first of October 2007 will be a great day for many Coastguards. The ones who are there when you call "Mayday" or dial 999, then take the call, process the information and trigger the actions that save lives.

They are the Coastguard Watch Assistants (CWA) with about two years service who have trained, studied and passed their exams at the end of their first year.

Why the celebration ?

Because they have an unexpected pay rise ! A genuine cause for celebration.

The Government has raised the National Minimum Wage and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has been forced to raise the pay rate for Coastguard Watch Assistants up to the level of the new National Minimum Wage.

Yipee ! Loadsa Money !

Chatting to one of the Chaps who works in My Marina.
"Dockmaster" is His Title.
Said Bod is also a Volunteer Coast Gaurd. (shore based)
He told Me about the "Pay Structure"
Minimum Call Out 3 hours.
£5 an hour or thererabouts.
To cover fuel etc etc.
Tax Man contacts Him and demands 22% of said "earnings"!!!
Said bod is not doing this stuff for an "Earner" , Man is a Volunteer for Christs sake!
"No" says Tax Man, "We still wan't our pound of flesh"
So although the "Volunteer" is paying at the pump for His fuel and tax thereof, the bastewards want to tax His expenses for helping to rescue peeps!!!!
Taint a Job explains My Man tiss a voluntary thing.
Still want a Slice, says Taxman.
"You are getting paid"
Like yer say
"Yippee Loads a Money"
What a load of Cr%p

Almost entirely accurate but not quite re fuel - we get paid mileage from home to station and back. If we have to use own vehicle on the shout (for which we must be insured) then the mileage also gets reimbursed. (I am not insured and will not use own vehicle).
Yes it's at the minimum wage rate and yes it gets taxed.
We don't do it for the money, do we!

Earning the minimum wage doesn't seem like cause for celebration. Or am I missing the irony emoticon?

The celebration is the pay is being raised to the level of the minumum wage.

Irony was in use. Since most users of this forum are not Americans I thought I did not need to state ;
"Warning , Irony may be present."

I was referring to the full time staff who work 42 hours a week in the Ops Rooms - not the CRO's who are the volunteer heroes.

Err... Now that we have generated a modicum of confusion - Let's go the whole hog....
And as for un-leaded fuel - well think of the complications that will cause!

Edited to note that;
There is more than one way to rescue a curdling hollandaise sauce.
