Have booked tutor for 5 days tuition culminating in the coastal skipper assesment ,on our own boat, for SWMBO, 18 year old son and myself. We completed Yachtmaster theory and day skipper last season so do have some experience. My problem is the weather forecast for next week, and although i know 5 day forecasts are notoriously inaccurate, is crap. There is a fine dividing line between gaining valuable rough weather handling experience with a competent instucter and frightening SWMBO to death.

imho, you and the instructor should be able to pick and choose when you go out, and if (as per yr bio?) you are in plymouth whole chunks if not most of the course can be done inside the breakwater. Talk to the instructor?

Not sure how much of the Coastal course could be done inside the Breakwater - Day Skipper yes. On our Coastal course we went Dartmouth - St Peter Port - Plymouth - Salcombe - Dartmouth. Included two long passages at night. Mind you that was in a sailing thingy and we all know that yachties do things the hard way/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

As you say, instructor should be able to arrange things so that no one gets scared though.

I agree with you mate, weather here is so unpredictable, have booked same course, but we're going to do it in France in August, best of luck with the course..and the weather!
