I've done the dinghy splits (One leg on boat other on dinghy) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif however, I somehow seemed to summon herculean strength to bring my legs together and thus the dinghy closer to the boat in order to avoid falling in and being laughed at.

Returning to my boat (dried out on pebbles) from a friends boat(afloat)after a night cap ,I nosed the BOW of the rubberduck into the steep pebbly bank .

Someone who will remain nameless then stepped out of the STERN of the dinghy into 4 foot of water.Seemed amusing at the time.

Came out of Porthmadog sailing club a little merry. Down steps to dinghy pontoon to find our dinghy hemmed in tight, rather than start adjusting lines to get out, we lifted our dinghy onto pontoon and walk it to the end to launch into open bit of water.

Swmbo at the bow and me walking backwards at the stern, a few steps later I says to also rather merry crew mate slow down, but she either does not hear me, or the beer delay was just too long as I was shoved over the end backwards into the water. Luckily I stood up and walked back up the steps after first checking to see if anyone had seen. The crews of the three boats who were visiting were quickly up and in their cockpits to see what the splash was, it was dark and I was out before they saw.

I rowed past them, soaked to the skin, just said evenin and carried on to my mooring as though nothing had happened. SWMBO found the whole thing very funny, cowbag!

The following is all EMBARASSINGLY true.Oct 2003. Rents a 30m barge in Amsterdam for a few days, Lovely thing no engines moored permanetly and fast to the side of Niuew Kaisergracht,a spit and a cough(Not that I knew what was coming)from "Skinny Bridge and two stops on the underground from Central station.Despite no engines still a boaty feel, nice wheelhouse, woody bits anchors ships bell etc. Second day, nice afternoon,"lets chill out on the coachroof/deck"says I ok says Her. Perhaps a bottle and a half of wine(between two) a bit of Famouse Grouse for one, nice stuff from the Deli round the corner Dutch cheese, obviously. Anyway Sun goes down a bit sick of waiving at Oriental tourists on the Trip Boats decide to clear the decks,You go below dearest loveley isn,t it I,ll tidy up cos I,m used to leaping about on boats Har Har Jim lad(and other Salty Dog impressions)After 4 or 5 trips from deck to wheelhouse to clear debri of the afternoons repast ,hops off coachroof onto foredeck(I,m good at this by now)clutching a quarter bottle of Famouse Grouse, (No wasn,t pi**ed started life as a half bottle that afternoon) onto the side deck then gravity took over, somersault and pike into the Gracht, surfaced spitting and coffing with a firm grip on the Grouse flapping abouit like a demented Flounder. Luckily two Van Der Valks were passing and hauled me out the Gracht, uttering Dutch logic about boats booze and Big Fat Welshmen not being a good mix (I think) However limping through the wheelhouse into the saloon where the better half was relaxing in front of the Tele onto the polished saloon floor, another half somersault and BANG on the floor to aggravate the bruises suffered on connection with the canal side. Crawling into the shower now with beloved doubled up in gastronomic pain/laughter thinking this was a side show for her entertainement,I kid you not slipped on the proverbewal bar of soap back out the shower on to the same ,now very bruised area, to visit the aforementioned polished floor. Now realising I,d also lost my recentley aquired triband mobile phone and best Silly Hat dashed on deck bol***ed naked ,now doing a beached whale impersionation with a boat hook, trying to retrieve lost it ems. Two more Van Der Valks past by and didn, t bat an eye lid ! Probably due to Ditch I meen Dutch liberism or the size of my manhood). Any way there was nothing more I could do but to nurse my bruises and finish off the Famouse Grouse due to my stalwart tenacity had survived the ordeal! Then in Janiuary 2004 I Lost the replacement phone in L ivepool,s Coberg Dock. Now that.s another Story

A couple of years ago, there was an occasion when I pulled into the fuel dock at Chichester Marina with my son, then aged 11. "Throw me that line" said I, stepping lightly onto the pontoon. He did, smartly releasing it from the cleat in the process. There followed:

1 an attempt by me to pull several tons of boat toward the pontoon against the wind from an off-balance position

2 a splash.

3 the sight of me climbing aboard via the bathing ladder, waving to the crowds and slinking off.

What were your "other reasons"? I slipped into newhaven dock when unstepping a flying fifteen mast (on my own, 110 lb, 5'4"). Came up to find ex and two kids, being delivered back from their weekend, looking down at me, still grasping the spar.
No damage, just my red face.

and yes, drunk, been on my own for a while, sailor wanted me to 'look at his upholstery', hooked me out of the pub (2 pints is enough for a half pint like me). As we progressed toward his boat, I realised his intentions were not work oriented...especially, when as we passed his car, he extricated bedding from his boot and chucked it at me... and when we reached the pontoon, the Hand Of God pushed me (well, I fell) into the dock. He said "you can take your wet things off down below" I don't think so! Ran home. Lucky escape? Wasted opportunity? The way it was. He never did place an order. I kept the bedding dry.

And the other time..Jumped off with the lines onto a finger pontoon iin a strange marina. It was so tippy! I was so tired! Quite proud of the fact that I got a bight round the cleat and stopped the boat on the way down, down, down. Glug.

Did something similar in Lanzagrotty! Jumped off fairly high freeboard cat with bow line in hand. Landed on the end of a very wobbly finger pontoon, which proceeded in a downward motion under my weight, gravity being what it is. Unfortunately, the buoyancy in the barrell-shaped floaty thing under the finger, soon overcame my downward motion, and proceeded in an upward direction at some speed. At this point, I still had some forward momentum, and was catapulted forward in a lovely curve, straight into the 'oggin. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Kept hold of the bow line, though. Eventually I was pulled out by the rest of the crew once they had tied up the boat, and stopped laughing!

Closest I came was when hauling up the anchor it got stuck and I leant over pulpit to check what was going on, next thing I was over but I'd managed to get a leg hooked over the guard rail. SWMBO did'nt even notice as I dangled upside down head inches from the briny, managed to get back on board acquiring in the process some really impressive bruises at the back of the knee!

Aboard 5 tonner, deep keel 4' 6" draft, just been craned into mud berth, on legs, tide out. Tripped over line on side deck, over guardrails, 7 feet fall, flat, face down into mud. Black front, clean back. Lost the photos unfortunately. I hates mud! Sober and sixteen at the time.

Re: C\'mon own up and show yourself !! in this truth poll !!

I've never fallen in off a yacht yet, (only a matter of time...) but recently I was on a ship in an exotic part of the world which will remain nameless (and for those with memories of my other posts it wasn't SA) where the local senior officer had just 'discovered' sailing. He had all the enthusiasm of the newly converted and he was very keen on Hobie cats and roaring around the bay. I dutifully offered to crew and having not been on a Hobie for years joked that the last time I was on one was as a student when I'd pitchpoled it and had to be rescued.

You know what's coming. As he launched me over the forestay in a classic pitchpole, I still have the scars on my foot from the coral that I kicked - I think I would have been better off kicking him - or at least insisting that I took the helm and then I could be the author of my own misfortunes. At least the water was warm.

I would like to take part but I've never fallen in, I could never see the point! if I wanted to go swimming then I would, but if I was on board then the idea is to stay there!

Peter.
