C\'mon Liveaboards! You can make a difference!

A couple of weeks ago I met a liveaboard here in Marmaris Yacht Marina who is on an extraordinary quest. He is meeting his father, the original skipper of the Rainbow Warrior, in the Indian Ocean and heading towards the Chagos Islands on a peaceful protest.

In my ignorance I'd never even heard of the Chagos Islands, let alone know about the rediculous situation regarding the UK government kicking out 2,000 islanders (all of whom are UK citizens) to make way for an American airbase.

Since meeting Sam, Liz and I have developed a website that aims to keep track of Cindik and Musichana's progress. They will be sending us log reports via SSB and we'll be plotting their course and updating the log as and when it happens.

On the website we have created a 'pledge' page, which has received 90 pledges in less than a week. We have also set up the Virtual People's Navy which allows people who live and work on boats to offer their support to the cause, either directly or indirectly. Links and images are encouraged.

Please, if you know about the Chagossian plight and want to do something about it, or don't know anything and want to learn more about how the UK government acted illegally and immorally by destroying the livelihoods of thousands of islanders in one of the most beautiful spots in the world, please visit:

People's Navy

Your support, which can be given from the comfort of your computer, would be really appreciated.

To help encourage you, we should tell you about last Sunday. We managed to get hold of a copy of the award winning John Pilger documentary, Stealing A Nation, which highlights the plight of the Chagossians, and showed it to the liveaboards in the marina. We were expecting 10 people to turn up. Instead the screening was shown to ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY liveaboards! As a result of the resounding support the entire marina is now helping Sam make his final preparations. The marina has dropped all marina charges, and electricians, mechanics and engineers are helping Sam with his engine, power requirements and installation of solar panels that the yachties here have clubbed together and paid for.

We CAN make a difference! Please support
People's Navy to learn a bit more and head over to the 'Pledge' and 'Virtual Navy' pages.

Thank you!
