Clyde boat fire and subsequent rescue

Press Association Ltd. 2012

"A man has been rescued after spending six hours drifting in an inflatable dinghy which he climbed into when his boat caught fire and sank.

His 21-foot motor cruiser went down at about 2pm off Troon in Ayrshire.

The rescue operation was launched this evening after Clyde Coastguard received reports at 7.50pm that a red flare had been spotted off the coast.

Troon lifeboat searched the area and found the man drifting in the dinghy at 8.05pm.

He was taken to shore suffering from smoke inhalation and suspected hypothermia.

The man was then taken to Ayr Hospital."

But why did it take him 6hrs to set off his flare?

He may have previously set off flares that hadn't been seen, for all we know.

Friends of friends were kayaking across the North Sea years ago, and ran into trouble off the Belgian coast (I think they had been delayed and blown off course by the weather, and one or more of them had started hallucinating with exhaustion). They had plenty of flares with them, but it was only their very last flare that was seen.

the event got me thinking about grab bags etc and how i never quite get around to sorting it all out until we are well offshore

maybe i should tie the zip shut so i stop borrowing stuff out it like torch gps etc :-)

I understand he had a handheld VHF but did not work (battery flat.).....during the initial search involving two other lifeboatsvand a Rescue Helicopter he fired off flares at passing rescue helicopter and fishing boat ....all without being seen......one does wonder why the search did not involve the tasking of the Troon Lifeboat from the start?......I guess the CG did not factor the possible drift into account?....anyway the main thing is the outcome was a good one and hopefully a few things will be learnt by all.

Apparently he left Rothesay on sat on passage to Whiting bay Arran.
I would guess that he intended going down Kilbrannan sound as opposed to the east side of Arran and perhaps this is what the CG assumed and the reason they did not task Troon LB.
The casualty maybe then decided to passage down the east side of Arran due to the weather conditions (but not inform anyone of his change of passage) where I would guess his boat problems started.
The wind on sunday was s-sw at first then went west so I would estimate he must have been somewhere down along E of Arran when the engine failed and she drifted towards Ardrossan.
The CG would be expecting him to be on the n or w side of Arran.
Although apparently they did check out Cumbrae while searching for him.

"Clyde Wanderer"...Rothsay to Whiting Bay via the Kilbrannan Sound I don't think so!......why would you assume that?....the obvious route to me would be down the east side of Bute then direct to Whiting Bay.

While I'm a believer in flares, one snag in carrying them around is that they could be misconstrued as offensive weapons if one visits a pub with them - so risking oneself being locked up forever by some overzealous plod, and - like handheld VHF's - they're not all pocket sized.

I know I'm risking howls of outrage and it's by no means the perfect answer, but I've always wondered why mobile phones aren't waterproof as standard, a friend has such a thing but it cost megabucks !

Lately I've taken to carrying my mobile in a snap-seal sandwich bag, and have a combined carabiner / torch clipped to it, though I probably shouldn't mention that this carabiner is anodised bright pink, which I wonder might get me into more trouble than it saves me from !
