Further to the posts on 'Snooty or Friendly' here's an idea.

How about a new club (no premises) where like minded folk can cruise together, help each other out, crew, or just generally socialise and bore the pants off each other about boats.

No blazers or cravats allowed, and being kind and understanding to new boaters is compulsory.

I'm based in Poole but anywhere not too far away would be OK.

Anybody interested or is it a crap idea.

P.S. I am not a committee man so somebody else would have to make up rules and all that sort of nonesense.

Sounds a good idea, probably could'nt stretch to our own preimses but could hire a room/bar in a pub or hotel
venue at regular intervals, meet to swap notes tell swashbuckling tales of our adventures, be like the forum
only in the flesh. Ohps I mentioned flesh hope Kims not about.

"The Med has got me" (no not the Medway the other Med)

Just thought Byrons pad would do for a venue.

There was a "loosely" formed club in poole a few years ago, called the Jolly roger club. Yes you guessed it, the club burgee was that! It doesn't take a lot to organize, if thats the right word. Club house can be the nearest pub! If you give one of the marinas a call they can normally find space for "get togethers".

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

That type of laid back club already exists... its called the Oxford Ditch Cruising Club and funnily enough regularly rallies to my house. Costs £25 to join and £25 p.a.
Formed in (I think) 1952 (or ws it 1947?) it has quite a large membership and is recognised as quite a strong force on the Thames.

BRILLIANT

Right ..... who's going to organise it then!!!

I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

I will be in Poole on Wednesday - anybody else around, we could start getting the constitution written and then the logo for the hats and the blazers, and decide how stringent the membership criteria is going to be... certainly nobody under the age of 55. Oh and another thing we don't want any riff-faff or people with cruisers under 65ft.

Right that's a start.

Seriouly though I will be in Poole on Wednesday if anyone is around !

Is that "BRILLIANT" cos its in Poole and by the way I thought you said NO blazers what

As Stated, an excellent idea. Can we have/be a virtual club as
well cos it would take me 3 weeks to get to poole in boat. But I have some
friends down there so i come with my dingy and stay over.

maybe we can have a computer set up at meetings so
us virtual boats can net-meeting in!!!!

Looks like you've done a full circle. All the rest of us just meet here. Then go to the pub when we meet up. Just a thought!!!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Great idea, Simon, but I just wonder if we need a formal club as such. Your idea seems to be driven by people in the Poole area wanting to get together (as BarryH, Duncan & I did at the weekend), no doubt people in Sussex, Thames/Medway etc., also like a get together.

What I'm trying to say is, I think, that we can probably arrange get togethers and/or trips in company, via these pages and PM's etc. We all live & cruise in different parts of the country, or even world, so perhaps interested parties exchanging email addresses, mobile numbers etc. is best way forward. Give these and your in.

Just a few random rambling thoughts!

Old Chinese proverb 'Man who sail boat into rice field, soon get into paddy'

That'd be good. We've got the germ of an idea of a get together at Wareham Quay during half term week, I think that's w/c 21st Oct. It was suggested by some a while back, can't remember who now! Tides are quite good that week for getting vessels of a reasnoable size up to Wareham.

I think (IMHO) it would be good if someone posted a map of how to get there
by car. (Just local area would do)

Re: Club for normal and lazy people

Ok, so no cravats and so on, and certainly none of that "membership" nonsense with subscriptions. And the meetings they're a bit boring, so don't have them either.
