Friends
I received my new Clipper Wind instrument today and was a bit surprised by the masthead unit which was a bit bigger than excpected.
It looks as if it's supposed to be fixed to the side(starboard/port) of the mast. Is this correct? Is there any other way to fix it. I think most other masthead units(including my old non-functioning Stowe) are fixed to the top of the mast, not the side.
Any views are appreciated.

Thanks

I fitted one and yes the bracket is designed to fit on the side.I looked at modify to fit on top but when up the mast the unit seemed to offer plenty of clearance.had no trouble with mine and am pleased its bulky and robust as when I was in a hale storm ice bigger than golfballs other boats suffered damage to thier masthead gear mine survived and works fine

Billskip is right, fasten on the side of the mast and it is very sturdy.

You can replace the two moving assemblies quite easily by prising off the cap on the unit and removing the crimped washer.

Am I right in thinking from what you say that it is possible to remove the wind vane easily by just levering off a cap.

My instrument is now five years old and has recently started to stick in light winds, so some investigation and t.l.c. is needed.

Yes:

The three cups assy. can be bought from NASA and come with instructions on how to remove/refit sealing cap.

I was quite staggered at the simplicity of the thing as both cups and vane spin on pegs with a small magnet set into the body of each passing over a fixed magnet in the main housing unit.

Hi Olav - no reply re your wind instrument but I am trying to make contact with Norwegians for a forthcoming trip. We will cruise from Stavanger to Lofoten from May - September this year - will you be cruising around that time at all? Please reply to my email lizrobertson35@aol.com
