Morning everyone...

Sorry to ask another sensible question, I'm sure over time I'll break!!

Ive got a Clipper Duet Log/Depth, it only reads up to 26 knots- I get a GPS reading of well over 30. Does anyone know what speed these gadgets read up to?
My other thought is that the paddlewheel has been mounted too far forward by the previous owner and is not getting a fair chance- its about 4' from the stern on a 21footer- is this the problem?

Any good jokes today? I need a good laugh- or mental help or something!

Have you tried using the inbuilt calibration to to correct the reading?. I don't have the handbook here, but Nasa are most helpful

Paddle Wheel Logs/speedos are notoriously inaccurate. The slightest bit of weed caught up can alter a reading no end.
You can try and calibrate as has been suggested or you can rely on your GPS readings, even without allowing for Tides etc. it will always be more accurate.

Not sure about the clipper, but have you checked if the transducer is in the fully down position. My Navico has 2 positions and needs to be in the fully down position on a planing hull with faster speeds.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen, Unfortunately the unit wasnt reading too well from the time she was launched with a clean bot- I shall however look at the calibration.

Is the cable the correct lenght...does it pass near anything that might cause noise..like the engine....

Also be aware that almost all of the logs on the market are not built for speed. it is very common to see a broken paddle wheel as they cannot take the pounding. After all they are mostly designed for yachts...but like anything in life ..you get what you pay for. This in mind the very expensive units are usually ok.
