My Dad's 12' rowing boat is heading towards becoming kindling. He bought her 35 years ago from Wrights of Ipswich. He wants to replace her with a boat of between 12' and 14', principally for rowing but capable of sailing with a standing lug. All spars must fit into the boat for rowing home. More a rowing boat with sails than a sailing boat with oars although she will need to have a centreboard or similar. For use on the sea rather than inland. Anyone got any reccomendations for builders or designs of such a clinker built boat?

McNulty boats of south shields, do exactly what your dad is looking for, in wood and glass. I dont know if they have a website.

Sadly McNulty are no more otherwise they would be my first stop. Drascombe range has been bought by Churchouse, but they do not build clinker boats.

Shocked!! I saw them at the boatshow this year! What a bloody shame! Luckily I have one, a 7'6" rowing tender. I'll take extra care of it now. Send a PM to forbsie, I think he knew of one of the type of boat your looking for.

Find a builder?

I think that, since your father obviously knows exactly what he wants, and it is a bit "non-standard" (most boats of this size have a definite emphasis on sailing, with correspondingly more beam and flatter floors, making them quite hard to row) he might do as well to have a boat built for him - there are quite a few people who build clinker dinghies.

For example

The IBBTC at Lowestoft. They build the RNLI boarding boats (I have one of their early specimens) and whilst this is a beefy 16 footer she is a rowing boat which can sail (after I fitted a rig to her) quite well. The standard of building is extremely high and she is a an excellent seaboat. A small version should do the trick.

Re: Find a builder?

Thats right, just what I was looking for in my original post. I have had two further suggestions, Iain Richardson in Orkney and Lakeland boats in Cumbria. Anyone got experience of these or any other builders/ designers? I am in SE Scotland so I would prefer to use someone North of the Humber/ Mersey.

Re: Find a builder?

At the back of my mind, I dimly recall an article in Classic Boat about a builder of such boats somewhere in the Western Isles. I think he was building an Ian Oughtred design at the date of the article. Sorry to be so vague.

Not too late with the advert yet! We are still using the old boat at the moment. We seem to take our time about boat things in our family. My sailing boat was built for my grandfather in 1935 and the rowing boat built for my dad in 1968. We clearly don't rush into making changes. (and we expect our boats to be built to last).
