clinker dinghy what is it sail marking looks like a bishops mitre!

Looking at this link http://www.bhyc.org.uk/index.asp?page=scow-section it might be that your boat is a Bembridge Scow. They use a mitre as a sail marker and are a local Isle of Wight class.

The scow is too small and doesn't have the side decking your boat has. Looking again at google results finds a Bembridge Swan which has the curious little gratings on the side decks. Builders site is here http://www.swanboatcompany.co.uk/the-swan/ . So what you may have is a Swan hull with some scow sails.

Good spot on the mitre of the scow well done I am in contact or awaiting some info from local boat builders on iow a few leads to chase up but no identification as yet

I did think and look at the Swan however it's almost 2ft longer and with the mast and reefing arrangment on the boom it does seem it was rigged in a fashion quite different

The mitre does seem to mean it was local to iow could be a complete one off but I have a feeling there were more of them as a class at some stage

Someone will know. I have seen that insignia before, but not on a scow. IOW scows have lug sails.

Looks like a very nice boat, not sure what has been going on at the foot of the mast though and perhaps heavy to launch, have you sailed her?

I know this is an oldish thread, but here goes anyway. The insignia is that of the Brading Haven Yacht Club, Embankment Rd, St Helens, IW. Tel 01983 872289. Maybe see if you can talk to Steve Lymn who is the Swan class captain, as he may be able to tell you if it actually is a Swan.

The local boatbuilders for the scow is A A Coombes Ltd, a bit further along the embankment, tel 01983 872 296. The ones they produce now are grp of course. The late Alan Coombes also designed and made the Swan, though as the above link hints at, the grp ones are now made elsewhere.

The Bembridge Scow is sailed by both the BHYC and the Bembridge Sailing Club. There are other Scow fleets at Yarmouth and Lymington, and there are subtle differences between the three types (not that this has much to do with the Swan of course!).

Brading Haven Yacht Club used to race a number of boats similar to this in the 1960's with a mitre on the sail which were known simply as Havens. From the photo it appears as if the centreboard case has a round at the aft end which havens had, the centreplate in them was fairly thick(10mm +) but the mast was keel stepped and whether it is the camera angle the hull does not look quite right.

I'd guess that mast tabernacle is a later addition.
The Bishop's hat is a Brading Haven YC insignia.

Hi Tom

I'm pretty sure that this boat is a Haven OD that used to sail from the Brading Haven YC. Do you know if it has a name? I can trace some of the old owners or at least some of their descendants who may be able to shed more light than I can.
