I was just doubling up me lines and stuff for the winter. We need some extra stern cleats, which got me thinking about where to put them, backing pads and the like.

our existing stern cleats are on the stern (not unsurprisingly) and cannot have much backing as they are on a fairly narrow (maybe 5") piece of of GRP. They have been there quite successfully for the last 30 years.

the midship cleats are too small for my taste and similarly are close to the toe-rail and I can feel the bolts through the carpeting in the locker - again bggr all backing.

should I be worried?

And the main part of the question - how fussy should I be about backing pads for the new ones that I'll fit - there is no way that I'll find somewhere with a lot of flat GRP real-estate so maybe the max backing pad will be about 4" wide by say 8" long or so.

incidentally there is no way that I'll be able to achieve the nirvana of one cleat-one rope
