Cleats dont look right?

Hi all, i was about to fit the cleats i got for the 20 foot cruiser. Now i now all about the bigger the better and good mounting point etc but these just dont look strong/big enough.




They are 150mm with a 20mm rise ( i will be using 10-12m rope ) and M5 bolts. It is the M5 bolts and the way they are bolted i dont like as cleats are under side strain and then these are under moor leverage, it would be better with low bolts ?

These i do like and seem good and strong with M10 bolts, even in the 150mm size.

It is no wonder things take me so long to do with faffing over things like this, if it doesnt seem right i just cant get the job done until i a, happy with it.

Any help please folks :)

I agree with you feelings about the M5 fixing screws Mine ( 19ft boat) are 1/4"

My cleats are all YS fittings ........ some supplied originally with the kit, some extra ones added by myself

Most are solid base similar to YS7107 but two bow cleats that I added are four point fixing YS7111

That's qi#uite small. And won't handle a couple of turns of 12mm rope all that well.
I quite like the look of the old ones TBH. Get them stove enamelled or something?

The stainless ones the OP has, are probably OK. I might suggest drilling them out to take an M6 at least though.
It's all only as strong as what it's bolted to.

Would agree. The others are piss-poor especially if intended use is for mooring.
Not forgetting a good solid backing plate.

Oh they will have 18mm marine ply spreader plate bedded down on sikaflex and 25mmx1.5mm SS washers. I could even go with a 3mm plate with the ply aswel.

I am being picky though and after 316 SS. Two fixing hole i will be happy with but at least M8

Do you mean the top over hang/lip, i see what you mean so i could do with measurements to see, i wll have search as these are the preferred at the minute, or the

Still M5 - M6 is not much more, as above i feel safer with minimum M8 if not M10.

These look better, just from China, not keen on getting things from there, take so long ot arrive and quality i am not sure on.
I could see if i can get some over here.

Strength then looks i think, so i have decided on the last ones i posted above from China, just trying to work out if i will charged duty on them. Never bought from overseas before.
 
People are forever trying to reinvent the wheel. The last ones you show look OK, if big enough.. The cleats on my 34ft boat will take three separate lines routinely, and I would regard this as the minimum for general use.
 
I bought some cheap stainless ebay cleats a few years back.
They needed a little polish with autosol every few months or they'd rust very slightly.
At the price, I could live with that.
 
M5 is pretty weak, when you deduct the thread cut. It gets better exponentially as you go up in size. Even on my little boat, the mooring cleats are held down by M8 bolts.

While those nice looking cleats may be mailed from within the UK, do you really think they are made there?

Well at last i can get on with it then :)

Chose these in the end, good price and i think they look ok. take plenty of rope to,you can see the size difference, they have a good quality aswell about them, a good 10mm thread depth aswell on M10.
