Clear weather

When returning from Shotley on Thursday afternoon I noticed that the weather was so clear that from Swin Spitway all the way to the river mouth I had a clear view across the Foulness Sands, over the mouth of the Thames, the Kent coast and all the way to North Foreland. It was so clear that even without the binoculors I could see the ships going up the Thames, the sunlight on the houses at, I assume, Sheerness, bouys in the Medway and the sunlight on the fields at North Foreland. With the bins I could see small boats in the Thames approaches! I've never seen it so clear.

In theory, most of what I could see should have been over the horizon!

Anyone any idea how and why it should have been so clear? It had been blowing strong westerly for a couple of days but the wind had backed towards the south then dropped altogether. The sky was clear.

I do love those moments of perfection though. When I came out of the Thames, at slack, for about half an hour, the estuary was so calm there was but not a single ripple before my bow. I've yet to experience fog, but I can't say I'm looking forward to it.
